We know how challenging and overwhelming it can be to think about moving your company. What was once an exciting step in the growth of your business can quickly turn into a headache of confusion and chaos. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Moving can be a great experience for you and your team. With a little organization and communication, you can keep the excitement of growing your company while making the move to the new location.
The president of Riverbend Signworks, Brad Morrison, has some key things to remember when moving your company. He has also provided a free, downloadable checklist template developed for our own move from Davenport, Iowa to Bettendorf, Iowa this past summer.
“Location Is Part Of Your Brand”
The location of your company can be a huge brand builder. Depending on where you decide to relocate, keep in mind the venue can have a huge impact on the development of your brand. Take this opportunity to remember who you are, who your target market is, and find a place that will enhance your company brand. Ask yourself if the location communicates who you are to your clients.
“Have A Written And Updated Checklist”
Your checklist is going to be what saves your sanity, so include as many details in the process as possible and post the checklist where all your employees can see it. Involving your team in the process will help them feel cared for and valued, and will allow you to allocate details effectively to prevent burn out. Make sure you update your list weekly and have a quick “Update Meeting” to ensure everyone is on the same page. Several weeks before the big move, try having a couple “Update Meetings” per week. The key to success is team involvement!
“Visualize the Space Before You’re There”
Visualizing the space before you actually move in will help with frustration on moving day. Create a floor plan and try different layouts with all your equipment and furniture, and don’t overlook the small details that end up being bigger issues than you had planned. Outlets, lighting, and electricity are important features that tend to be overlooked and end up causing huge issues in the layout and flow of your space. They may seem like small details, but taking the extra time will set you up for success.
“Engage Your Providers”
Including your internet and utilities providers will help in the ease of the process as well. They can offer suggestions for your space and involving them early will help make sure you are up and running the day of move in.
“Let Your Clients Know”
Well…this is hopefully a given, but maybe you forgot in the busyness of the move so we will show you some grace. LET YOUR CLIENTS KNOW! We can’t stress this enough. In as many places as you can, communicate to your customers where you will be moving: put a sign at your new location and your old location, use social media to your advantage, and send out an email with your new information. It will be a great opportunity for marketing and helps prevent customer confusion.
“Celebrate The Move”
Of course, in true Riverbend Signworks fashion, a party is required. Celebrate the hardwork with a company celebration. Thank your employees for their work to grow the company over the years as well as the extra help in the move, then take a moment to recognize the new season your company has entered into. When you have sufficiently celebrated, get back to serving your community!
