Back to Exterior Signs

A cabinet sign, also called a box sign or lightbox sign, is an aluminum cabinet with a removable face that carries your name and logo. Cabinet signs are usually lit from inside with LEDs, so your sign stays visible day and night. Riverbend Signworks designs, creates and installs cabinet signs for storefronts, shopping centers and multi-tenant buildings across the Quad Cities.

How a Cabinet Sign Works

The cabinet itself is strong, durable aluminum. The face can be single- or double-sided and comes in three common materials:

  • Polycarbonate. Similar to acrylic but stronger, usable across a wider temperature range, and highly transparent to light.
  • Acrylic. Available in clear and opaque colors.
  • Flex face. A printed, backlit material that makes full-color graphics glow at night and is easy to update when your message changes.

Because the face can be replaced without replacing the whole sign, cabinet signs are a practical choice for businesses that expect to rebrand. Read more: how illuminated cabinet signs work.

Where Cabinet Signs Go

  • Wall mounted on the front of a building, placed high enough to be seen from a busy road or a large parking lot.
  • Pylon signs that stand tall so they can be seen from a distance.
  • Monument signs near a busy road, often double-sided and illuminated.
  • Tenant panels that identify each business in a shopping center or business park.

Cabinet Sign FAQs

What is a cabinet sign?

A cabinet sign, also called a box sign or lightbox sign, is an aluminum cabinet with a removable face that displays your name and logo. It can be mounted on a wall, a pylon, a monument base or tenant panels.

Are cabinet signs illuminated?

Usually. Most cabinet signs are lit from inside with LEDs that shine through a translucent face, so they are visible day and night. Non-illuminated cabinets are also an option.

What is the face of a cabinet sign made of?

The three common face materials are polycarbonate, acrylic and flex face. Polycarbonate is stronger than acrylic and handles a wider temperature range, and flex face is a printed material made for vibrant backlit graphics.

Can I change a cabinet sign later?

Yes. The sign face is removable, so you can update your name, logo or message without replacing the whole sign.
